Am I a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

When you come in to be treated for varicose veins or spider veins, your doctor will talk to you about your medical history and perform diagnostic testing, which will likely include an ultrasound.

Good candidates are typically people who meet the following criteria:

  • Have realistic expectations
  • Are between the ages of 30 and 60
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding for a period of three months
  • Understand that the procedure will not prevent the development of new veins

Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective procedure, with each treatment session typically resulting in elimination 50% – 80% of injected veins.

What to Expect from the Procedure

Your interventional radiologist (IR) will use a very fine needle to inject the vein-dissolving solution into the varicose and spider veins. You may feel small needle sticks and possibly a mild burning sensation. The number of veins treated in one session will vary based on the size and location of the veins.

This procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and typically takes 30 – 45 minutes. After the treatment you will be instructed to wear compression hosiery or wraps to compress the treated vessels.

Veins should fully respond to sclerotherapy by:

  • 3 – 4 months, larger veins
  • 3 – 6 weeks, spider veins

However, new veins could appear over time and patients may need to return for additional injections.

Limitations of Sclerotherapy

Depending on the size, location, and number of veins needing treatment a more comprehensive plan may be required to achieve the desired results. Your treatment plan might include a combination of the following:

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy
  • Laser Therapy (EVLT)

Whether or not you are a candidate for sclerotherapy will depend on your diagnosis and a consultation with your interventional radiologist. But if you suffer from painful, unsightly veins sclerotherapy may be a solution. Call IVC today at 503-612-0498 to schedule an appointment for a consultation.
