Treatment / Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis / Thrombectomy for PE

Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis / Thrombectomy

When blood does not flow smoothly, it can begin to coagulate, turning from a free flowing liquid to a blood clot or thrombus.

Thrombolysis is a minimally invasive treatment where your vascular and interventional radiologist will use image guidance to direct a catheter to the site of the blockage. Once the catheter is in place, a clot-dissolving medication will be delivered through the catheter over several minutes. The physicians at IVC use a system called EKOS to dissolve thrombus.

Thrombectomy is a minimally invasive treatment where your vascular and interventional radiologist will use image guidance to direct a catheter to a site of the blockage. Once the catheter is in place, a mechanical device will be deployed at the site to remove the clot.

PE is a serious condition that can cause permanent damage to your lungs, and can even be fatal. Most of the time, the clots are small, so while they can still cause damage, they aren’t deadly. However, identifying and treating PE is vital to preventing lasting damage and saving your life.
