Diagnosis / Cancerous Tumors

Treatment options for patients with cancer continue to expand; one emerging treatment option is tumor ablation. Ablation is treatment that destroys tumors without removing them. This form of treatment attacks tumors using heat (radiofrequency ablation) or cold (cryoablation).

Where is Ablation Treatment Used?

For many patients, surgical treatments are not indicated because of the number or location of the disease, or because their overall health does not permit extensive surgery. For patients with a greater number of tumors, or tumors involving multiple organs, other forms of therapy may be a better option.

Thermal ablation therapy is most often performed for tumors involving:

  • Liver
  • Kidney
  • Lung
  • Painful Tumors in the bone

The goal of the treatment is to completely destroy the tumor.

Who is a Candidate for Ablation Treatment?

The effectiveness of this new technique in treating cancer depends on two things:

  • The size of the tumor
  • Its accessibility to the probe

In general, ablation is effective for cancers 3 cm or less and easily accessible percutaneously. The larger the tumor the more difficult it is to achieve complete cancer death, therefore early treatment is important.

Benefits of Ablation Treatment

  • In most cases, it can be performed without open surgery.
  • In some cases, it can be used to treat tumors when surgery is not an option.
  • It can relieve pain and blockages.
  • It requires a shorter hospital stay and recovery time compared to traditional surgical procedures.
  • It can be repeated if new tumors develop.
  • It can be used in conjunction with other cancer treatments.

IVC’s Treatments for Cancerous Tumors

At IVC, we offer several ablation treatments options for cancerous tumors including, cryoablation, which uses extreme cold to destroy tissue; radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation, which use heat to destroy cancer cells.
