Michael E. Pfister, MD RVT

Practice philosophy: Do it right the first time while treating patients in a considerate and caring fashion, the way you would expect to be treated.

“The most important part of my job, outside of direct patient care, is to communicate effectively, developing and maintaining a sustainable physician-patient relationship,” said Dr. Pfister. “Knowledge is power and I aim to empower my patients.”

Born and raised in Indiana, Dr. Pfister went to college at DePauw University to play soccer and study chemistry, possibly, he thought, to become a teacher. While majoring in chemistry, he decided to take entrance exams and apply to medical school, ultimately choosing Case Western Reserve University because of its unique nontraditional educational style. At Case Western, Dr. Pfister developed a fascination with anatomy and physiology that led to an interest in surgical specialties and a surgical internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Drawn by cutting-edge technology, Dr. Pfister started a diagnostic imaging residency in 1993 and found an immediate home in Vascular and Interventional Radiology, melding his early surgical and patient care skills with the technologic advances in minimally invasive procedures. He completed his fellowship training at The Dotter Interventional Institute at OHSU in 1999.

Dr. Pfister started his career as part of a small imaging group in Tualatin. “I fell in love with the Northwest and was excited to make Portland my permanent home,” he said. While developing the practice in Tualatin over the next 10 years to include advances such as acute stroke treatment, endograft repair of aortic aneurysms, carotid stenting, and kyphoplasty treatment of symptomatic vertebral compression fractures, it became increasingly evident that there was a better way to care for patients and that the greater Portland metropolitan community needed more Vascular and Interventional Radiology services.

In 2011, the practice left the confines of traditional Diagnostic Radiology to become Interventional and Vascular Consultants.

When he is not busy working, Dr. Pfister loves to spend time with his family hiking, skiing and chasing chickens.
